The Annotated Charlotte's Web
Published in Hardcover by Harpercollins Juvenile Books (March, 1994)
Authors: E. B. White, Garth Williams, and Peter Neumeyer
Average review score:

An excellent companion to the original book.
I purchased this book several years ago to give me more insight into E.B. White's classic novel. Every time I read and re-read the notes, rewrites and history of this touching story for children, I find myself learning so much more about the writing style of this fabulous author. The photographs of White's farmhouse add texture and depth to the story and my first grade students appreciated that he, too, had to make revisions on his work! A wonderful resource for anyone interested in children's literature.

"Quite a Good Story"
This story is suitable for all ages. It is for the old and the young ones.I like this book mainly because the characters are humorous and interesting, the setting of the story are not too much and last of all it is full of emotions. Happiness, sorrow, excitement and it is also a matter of life and death.

This book is great, it tells the classic story of friendship
I enjoyed reading Charlotte's Web as a child and now I enjoy reading the book to my children and students. I think part of the reason this book has remained one of my favorites is because of the classic friendship between Wilbur and Charlotte. Both characters demonstrate an unselfish kind of love that is demonstrated from the time they meet. As a mother I want to teach my children the valuable life lesson of being a good friend and I think this story teaches that lesson in a non-didactic fashion. Charlotte's Web will forever be a classic in my heart.

thats what friendships are about
this book is one of the best graphic novels i've read. i liked the drawings a lot. simple but spicific. i liked the friendship between black and white. and the freindship between the two kids and chocolate the gangster. i recomend it very much

Wonderful, magical, excellent, and surreal!
This book is simply wonderful. Though the story might be somewhat stereotypical, the art and characters redeem it. The art is a strange hybrid of Japanese and French styles. The characters are really touching, Black and the way he protects the retarted White, and White with his happy, almost microcephalic observations and attitude. I can't wait to read volume two, and I bet once you read volume one, you won't be able to wait either. Well worth the price of admission.

A great, wonderful, magical, must read book!!!!!
This book is one of the best examples of a graphic novel I've ever had the privilage to read. The art is surreal, and the story is magnificent. It's what Of Mice and Men should have been. The characters, even if stereotypical, are very touching, especially White. You really get a feel for them. Read this book. It's well worth the price of admission.

Black & White Landscape Photography
Published in Paperback by Amherst Media (August, 1999)
Authors: John Collett and David Collett
Average review score:

A little bit of all the important stuff!
I first borrowed this book from the library by title only in an on-line search. What a surprise! The authors have distilled a lot of important ideas and facts into simple sections, with pointers & critiques along the way. A veritible small wealth of information. While a pro might find this all rather second nature, an amateur will definitely find something of value in here, and a beginner will find the whole book very valuable.

Black & White Landscape Photography
This slim volume is a comprehensive guide packed with necessary information on black and white and landscape photography. The introduction to the book states, ". . . when photographing landscapes, you are at the mercy of these elements--quickly changing weather, changing and uneven illumination, poor contrast or limited tonal range, undesirable yet unchangeable foregrounds or backgrounds, and extraneous objects in the scene which may significantly detract from your composition." The challenge of creating a dynamic black and white landscape almost makes a photographer want to quit before beginning. Yet, with the help of this book, obtaining a spectacular black and white landscape seems to be within the realm of possibility. I like the book most because there is great detail in clear and understandable terms. Along with the text are more than seventy interpretive examples of black and white landscape photographs. The first section of the book discusses "The Artist's Tools." Everything from camera format to film and tripods are thoroughly addressed, including the benefits or drawbacks of various choices, prices and recommended accessories. Section two defines the art of landscape photography. Some questions answered are, "What is art?" "What makes a good landscape photograph?" and "Why black and White?" I found section 3 to be the most informative. Visual elements are explained in detail. Among some of the aspects covered are framing, vision, viewpoint, tonality and design. "Field Techniques" are explained in section four. The sometimes confusing effects of different colored filters on black and white images are explained with the help of charts and photographic examples. A condensed, but comprehensive explanation of the Zone System ends this section. The quotation, "The darkroom . . . allows you to create an image that exactly matches your artistic conception" introduces section five. This chapter takes us into the darkroom and beyond. Section six explains "Putting it all together," and section seven gives examples of field exposure, darkroom printing and Zone System field exposure records so we can repeat the perfect image every time. A list of recommended books for further reading is supplied as is a list of Internet resources. I found this book so helpful and comprehensive, I carry it with me into the field and find myself referring to it often. A definite five star addition to your library.

Excellent for learning how to compose or critique photos
I highly recommend this book to anybody interested in learning more about composing or critiquing photographs.

The Black and White Book : Two Sides to Every Story
Published in Hardcover by Atria Books (01 May, 2001)
Author: R.P. Moore
Average review score:

This book blew me AWAY!
This books just blew my mind. This book gave me such perspective on things and i would recommend it to anyone who wants to see the light as well as the dark!!!!

To each PERSPECTIVE is own
This book BLEW ME AWAY. It's still weighing heavily on my mind and heart right now, as I recall the feeling I had as I flipped every page in deep anticipation. This book is about acceptance. About embracing darkness, but being willing to see the light. It's about fear and love...and which do you choose to live in? The author, at one point, suggests that if you are angry, then be angry. Well, I'm angry. I'm angry that my mother found this book tucked far back in the bookstore, scrunched inbetween a bunch of self-help schmuck. This book deserves a much better place on the shelves; at the front of the store where raw light can glaze it from the windows. Where one and all can discover it. This is not a book that can be categorized. It's topic is not self-help, nor motivational. It is UNIVERSAL. There is a definite message, but only if you're willing to see it. R.P. Moore - whoever you are (and you keep us guessing), wherever you are, whatever you are....THANK YOU.

A REALLY dark book with some REALLY bright light!
This is the coolest book. You know how so many philosphy and self-help books sound like we're living in some magical world where everything is supposed to be perfect? This is the most honest book I've ever seen in its league because it doesn't ignore the dark side of life. In the end, though, it always shows a different way of looking at things. Whatever you're going through, this book lets you be angry, sad, disgusted -- then it's there for you when you feel happy and okay with everything. Words can't describe the way this book makes you feel. Five thumbs up.

Black and White Shots (Pro-Lighting)

Authors: Alex Larg, Jane Wood, and Alex Large
Average review score:

An Essential Book
I am a serious, pro-amature who's been away from photography for quite a few years. When I treated myself to a Nikon N80 for my birthday this year, I knew that black and white photography was where I wanted to focus. Black and White Shots is an invaluable source for me for staging as well as lighting for black and white photography. I was able to look at pictures that caught my eye and read both description and a diagram of how the photographer put the shot together. Film type, f/stops, lighting types, positioning and notes about the shoot -- this book had it ALL!!! It told me the basics and allowed me to add my own creative touch to a photo session. Definitely a reference KEEPER!

Amazing book!
This book is one of the best in studio photography. you can even use the lighting and diagrams for color portrait.
I love this book, it's the best among all the other books i have in this field.

Excellent resource for any level of photographer
As with all of the Pro Lighting series of books, this latest edition adds insightful tips and tricks into the world of "pro" level B/W photography. Especially helpful are the detailed shot elements that allow you to very closely achieve results like those you see in print.

A must have to complete the collection. Do not miss this title.

The Black Man's Guide to Working in a White Man's World
Published in Hardcover by General Pub Group (September, 1997)
Author: E. Lemay Lathan
Average review score:

The Truth
You may not like what Mr. Lathan says and you may not like how he says it but if you want to succeed in corporate America you should get this book and study it. Mr. Lathan tells the truth that black men and black women need to hear about working, setting goals, and making it. I've purchased several copies and gave one to every teenager in my family.

No Excuses, No Apologies, No Surrender!
This book is a breath of fresh air for anyone looking to succeed in life. E. LeMay offers no excuses for being born to an impoverished family. He shows how a little education and a lot of hard work can help anyone of any shape, size, disability, handicap or color succeed. E. LeMay refused to be stereotyped and shows how he succeeded because of his merits, not the color of his skin. E. LeMay is an inspiration to his peers and a positive role model for our next generation.

Very enlighening effort showing what Blacks face.
I enjoyed the ideas put forth to help his son deal with life. I took a lot of courage to put thoughts out there like these. I would like to think this book has helped me think about changing the way I look at people of all colors. It has put me on guard as to how I treat others and the attitude I portray. I will have my kids read it and then make sure they understand it. It will be a book I will pass onto my family and friends whenever possible.

Blue & Gray in Black & White: Newspapers in the Civil War
Published in Paperback by Brasseys, Inc. (01 September, 2000)
Author: Brayton Harris
Average review score:

Glad to See The Media Hasn't Changed!
I enjoy books about the Civil War. This was a great way to learn about the war from the people who were watching it. Nowdays, we have wars such as the Gulf War on television. Here were the folks who HAD to be your eyes and ears. This would be a great book to have high school classes read as a comparison to seeing a film about Vietnam or Desert Storm, just to see the contrasts. History classes in American History and Journalism would also benefit. For the general public, unless you are interested in these topics, it is a lot of detail to absorb.

How the Civil War helped make newspapers what they are today
From the Kansas City Star Magazine, (October 10, 1999) "The love-hate relationship between the newspapers and the men who fought in the Civil War is just one of the subjects of Brayton Harris' Blue & Gray in Black & White: Newspapers in the Civil War . . . [In an interview, Harris said] "Before the Civil War, the newspapers in the United States were primarily opinion sheets for their editors. By the end of the war, they had actually become newspapers in the way we know them today. . . .One thing that came through is that nothing really has changed except technology . . . the media works the same way today that they did in 1860. Reporters do the same dumb, or brilliant things. Publishers sometimes put profits above ethics then and they do now.'"

Good Stories, Hack Writing from the front!
From the Washington Times (October 2, 1999) "Mr. Harris' book is a compelling account of how the Civil War led to the emergence of the press as a power on the national scene. It gives fresh insight into how a cast of visionaries and tough reporters -- along with some rogues and crackpots -- used that power to shape the way the nation viewed the war the and for all time . . . .This book is the first full treatment of the subject of press coverage of the Civil War since a pair of books by J. Cutler Andrews nearly two generations ago . . . Readers may be distracted by some of the author's digressions . . . [but] the value of "Blue and Gray in Black and White" outweighs any quibbles. . . . Journalism is viewed as the disposable first draft of history. What Mr. Harris' book makes clear is that taken as a whole, the work of combat correspondents created a record of the war that has formed our perceptions and fueled our imaginations ever since." --

Buffalo Soldiers and Officers of the Ninth Calvary, 1867-1898: Black & White Together
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Trd) (October, 1999)
Author: Charles L. Kenner
Average review score:

Much More Than History
Kenner's book is an excellent narrative which chronicles the actual experiences of the buffalo soldiers and the white officers who served with them. The book is a pleasure to read because it goes beyond the dates and battles, opting instead to recreate their foibles and shortcomings as well as their valor and heroism. It takes a true historian to give the rest of us glimpses into such humanity.

Black and white in the 1800's
This is an incredible social history placed on the backdrop of the west. When most people think of racial issues in the American west, they think about White settlers vs. Indians on the warpath. Dr. Kenner's book presents a different picture of the West. His book focuses on the world of white calvary officers and their "colored" soldiers. Dr. Kenner talks about issues from the fighting skill of these often forgotten African-American soldiers to interracial dating to homosexuality. This is an incredible story, that no serious historian of the west should ignore.
